Braff's warm, velvety sound and knack for melodious improvisation are evident throughout the album.

Nicki Parrott and Rossano Sportiello, "People Will Say We're In Love" (Arbors) Parrott is an exceptional bassist and an endearingly modest singer; Sportiello an adroit pianist with telepathic reflexes. Together, they add sparkle to well-trodden standards and reawaken such worthy sleepers as Johnny Hodges's "You Blew Out the Flame in My Heart" and Tom McIntosh's "The Cup Bearers."

Carol Sloane, "Dearest Duke" (Arbors) There's no place for Sloane to hide on this intimate set, and that works out just fine for this underrated veteran singer. Accompanied only by piano and Ken Peplowski's clarinet and saxophone, Sloane glides over imperishable Ellington ballads, treating each with the blend of delicacy and solidity that only a skilled vocalist can conjure.
